I was also under the impression it was groundbreaking technologically. And, I'll admit, the first act did manage to maintain my focus in a way that's very impressive for a 100+ year old 3 hour movie. The second act, however, was so awful I could barely stay awake through it. The drivel propagated by Griffith is so horrible it cannot make up for any of the filmmaking tricks he "created" with this movie. (As for how much Griffith actually created and how much he made up is covered interestingly in an everyday cinephile article I highly recommend). Nevertheless, the first half was engaging, second half fell apart, 2.5 stars. Somehow I hit a profanity filter with this and had to edit myself. So, take this with a grain of salt.
