A slow-simmering Aussie drama about yearning for love and spiritual truth.
An introverted film about an extroverted subject, which is what makes it such a delicate, unique experience.
Underdeveloped it may be, but it's clear that James Harkness is reaching for something meaningful; he just hasn't reached it here.
There are a couple of questionable directorial choices ... but ultimately Birthday is a nicely performed drama that offers a genuinely fresh take on a tired subject.
