Movie Info

Boyfriends & Girlfriends is the sixth of French director Eric Rohmer's "Comedies et Proverbes" cycle. The sterility of the "new", prefabricated Parisian suburb of Cergy-Pontoise is used as the backdrop for the colorful activities of the film's five principals (literally colorful, in that each character is represented by a different hue). The dramatis personae includes Ministry of Cultural Affairs worker Blanche (Emmanuelle Chaulet); Blanche's friend, computer school student Lea (Sophie Renoir); … More

Mr. Rohmer, the most cerebral, most morally committed of French directors, is also the one who seems most aware of the particular influences of geography and meteorology on people.

Rohmer knows exactly what he is doing here. He has no great purpose, but an interesting small one: He wants to observe the everyday behavior of a new class of French person, the young professionals.

It's an utterly superficial movie -- a celebration of superficiality -- and utterly charming.

One of the things that makes Boyfriends and Girlfriends engaging is its ability to remain focused and intimate.

A particular bonus here is the depiction of contemporary life in a kind of sterile suburban high-rise community that's rarely seen in the French cinema but that seems very typical of recent French life.

Audience Reviews for Boyfriends and Girlfriends (L'ami de mon amie)

½

Rohmer's final part of his Comedies and Proverbs ends, at last, with My Girlfriend's Boyfriend. It feels like a bad episode of an 80's soap, which to its credit, it probably influenced many. Popular at the time no doubt but all I could see is all the things I didn't like about the 80's, It certainly doesn't do anything for French cinema, after the great films of the new wave and the great films Rohmer himself has made, this is a head scratcher. Oh, and again, it's not funny.
