Bruce Nolan's career in TV has been stalled for a while, and when he's passed over for a coveted anchorman position, he loses it, complaining that God is treating him poorly. Soon after, God actually contacts Bruce and offers him all of his powers if he thinks he can do a better job. Bruce accepts and goes on a spree, using his new-found abilities for selfish, personal use until he realizes that the prayers of the world are going unanswered.

As entertainment, it gives good value: it's light, quick and diverting. Morgan Freeman, predictably, gives it heart, gravitas and the appearance of wisdom; but it's Carrey who keeps all the balls in the air with refined mania.

Fun concept but it reads more just as the writers fantastical power fantasies. Bruce did not deserve his wife back at the end of the movie.

"Mmm… that’s it?" kinda movie. Had a fun concept but barely explored the chaos or possibilities of it. Still, Jim Carrey being Jim Carrey made it a decent one-time timepass watch.

Fun storyline. Main character learns to be less selfish alongside some great classic Jim Carrey humor. God being a black man was groundbreaking at the time and they picked a talented actor for the role. However, the story makes light of sexual assault on numerous occasions (a latino man, a woman on the street, his girlfriend). It is perpetrated by the lead character and he doesn't experience real consequences for, learn it's wrong, or truly make up for it. Latinos are shown only as thugs or imaginary service personas.

As a Christian, I was worried this movie would be full of offensive humor and just leave me with a bad taste in my mouth, but it actually ended up being pretty funny and had a message I could get behind. And as a movie in general, it’s nowhere near the funniest movie ever made, but having Jim Carrey, Morgan Freeman, and a good couple of other strong comedic talents absolutely helps. Mostly appreciative of the movie not mocking faith or God and instead having a message that fully showcases those things in a positive light. and even with all that being said, I think a non believer could absolutely enjoy it too.
