Part of a company made up almost entirely of ex-convicts and high school dropouts, Elwood takes advantage of his daft commanding officer, Col. Berman (Ed Harris), by selling heroin and stolen Army supplies wholesale. However, when a member of the company dies and an autopsy reveals a remarkable amount of drugs in his bloodstream, far more intense scrutiny is brought down on the base in the form of Sgt. Lee (Scott Glenn), a tough and savvy Vietnam veteran who immediately surmises that Elwood is the brains behind the base's black market operations. Unfortunately, Elwood has just happened upon the biggest score of his tour and now must unload two trucks full of arms and 30 kilos of heroin just as Sgt. Lee has begun to orchestrate his downfall. Based on Robert O'Connor's novel, BUFFALO SOLDIERS is cynical but not irreverent; it doesn't treat its characters irresponsible and often idiotic behavior lightly nor does it judge them. Director Gregor Jordan has done an excellent job of adapting the tone of the original novel to the screen, and, aided by excellent performances from Mr. Phoenix and Mr. Glenn, makes BUFFALO SOLDIERS a thoroughly enjoyable satire. Reviews for Buffalo Soldiers
The characters, if not sympathetic, are at least interesting and brought to life with authenticity by the talented cast.
It's a well-done satire that only the thinnest of skins would find insulting.
Like its bored soldiers, this movie seems to play with volatile substances with not nearly enough respect for their meaning.
If you can get past the idea that Buffalo Soldiers ... has any real relevance, you are likely to enjoy its sitcom snap and the performance of Phoenix.
Has many fine performances ... yet the movie fails to give meaning to their actions, or to evoke sympathy for their anti-hero attitudes.
Ultimately, it's a cold, caustic film that doesn't take a strong point of view but seems to offer up its numerous set pieces ... for sheer goony pleasure.
It's an enjoyable and occasionally thought-provoking motion picture whose viewership should not be diminished by the unfortunate and inaccurate 'anti-American' label.
It's a refreshing change from the recent string of celluloid recruiting poster movies.
At a time when the idea of patriotism is sometimes used to stifle dissent, it is important to remember that gripes and disgruntlement and anti-authoritarian gestures are part of our national heritage.
The film hits so many dissonant notes and random targets that its dark, dry wit is hard to locate in the buckshot.
It captures almost exactly the deadpan sarcasm and world-class bitterness most privates feel toward the vaunted entity that has absorbed them.
A sharp, savagely funny look at the Army during peacetime with 'nothing to kill but time.'
It pits a compelling central character against a formidable adversary in an intriguing setting while keeping you riveted to the cat-and-mouse strategizing, surprise turns and a few moments of actual warmth.
If it sometimes feels as if this is re-MASHing some of the same terrain as Robert Altman's classic from 1970, the fun is in watching Elwood's dream come true.
Its woozy, scattershot approach is a mishmash of bad throwaway gags, military clichés and dopey dope jokes.
