Anthology is thrilled to present California Company Town, a film which casts a probing, clear-eyed gaze at the landscape of California towns built and abandoned by the industries that necessitated their creation – onetime boom-towns now haunted by the twilight of the American promise. A versatile multidisciplinary artist, Schmitt creates evocative, deeply felt works that consider everyday elements of American life as cultural ritual, including a series of cinematic investigations of the intersections of landscape with personal memory (Las Vegas), with the history of the American Left (Awake and Sing), and with urban development (The Wash). --© Anthology Archives [More]

Reviews for California Company Town
A brilliant, haunting and informative expose' not to be missed and not to be forgotten at awards season!
[Director] Schmitt wisely allows the images to speak loudest -- a silent, sobering portrait of what happens after the well dries up.
Lee Anne Schmitt's simultaneously haunting and tiresome documentary is like a New Age western with its fond look backward and harsh criticism of the present.
The companies in Lee Anne Schmitt's elegy for California boom towns gone bust run the gamut from farming to logging to mining, but after a while, the towns themselves take on the same ghostly countenance.
