What to Know

Critics Consensus

With plenty of pulpy action, a pleasantly retro vibe, and a handful of fine performances, Captain America is solidly old-fashioned blockbuster entertainment.

There is entertainment value in The First Avenger, but there is a lot more frustration and disappointment. This was a missed opportunity that Marvel was never able to recover. Go to Full Review

Chris S @Janomi 1d Captain America: The First Avenger succeeds because it understands that Steve Rogers was a hero long before he became a super soldier. The screenplay wisely spends time showing his courage, compassion, and unwavering sense of right and wrong, making his transformation feel earned rather than simply the result of an experiment. Chris Evans perfectly captures Steve's humility and quiet determination, while Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter and Stanley Tucci's Dr. Erskine provide the emotional foundation that shapes the hero he becomes. Joe Johnston also gives the film a distinct identity, blending World War II adventure with classic superhero storytelling through excellent production design and a convincing period atmosphere. My biggest criticism is that the second half rushes through much of Steve's wartime campaign, making several major victories feel abbreviated. Even so, it's one of the MCU's strongest and most heartfelt origin stories. A solid origin but just not a 10/10 See more E.D. J @Salty_Sass 2d A solid enough introduction to Steve Rogers See more andrea C @Charst 4d La più classica delle favole americane nella perfetta rappresentazione dell'eroe americano. See more Aryaman S @AryamanS Jun 18 Captain America: The First Avenger is a thoroughly entertaining comic book film and one of the strongest origin stories in the MCU. Joe Johnston successfully blends the spirit of a classic wartime drama with light-hearted comic-book storytelling, all while remaining grounded in the ideals that define Steve Rogers. Although the second half occasionally relies too heavily on montages, the performances and sharp editing ensure the narrative remains engaging throughout. The production design, costumes, and visual effects convincingly recreate the World War II setting while Alan Silvestri’s triumphant score gives the film much of its heart and heroism, lending the film a distinctive identity within the MCU and Hollywood cinema. Captain America: The First Avenger succeeds as both a wartime superhero film and a compelling character study. Chris Evans delivers an excellent performance, perfectly capturing the character’s courage, sincerity, and unwavering moral compass. See more Read all reviews
