Guy Maddin's early masterpiece takes place in a 19th-century Alpine village where the wary residents--adult, child and animal!--must speak softly and tread lightly lest they cause an avalanche. But sexual frenzies teem in this world of repression, setting off incestuous love triangles and quadrangles with deadly consequences. Bathed in lurid, luminescent tints, Careful resembles a vintage melodrama from another planet--something that could only emerge from the singular mind of Maddin.

In part a hilarious satire about Canadian timidity, it also comes across periodically as a formalist gem about nothing at all. Go to Full Review

Careful is one long and amusing pun on German Expressionistic film imagery, Freudian psychology and quasi-Wagnerian storytelling, all carried to absurdist lengths. Go to Full Review

An acquired taste, Maddin is an unusually precise director who leaves little to chance. Whether one finds his approach too careful or just stunningly controlled will be up to individual cineastes. Go to Full Review

Annette A @aracha2026 1h Careful is one of those films that feels very strange and unique from the start, and I found it both interesting and challenging to follow. The story is set in a small, quiet village in the Rocky Mountains where the population has to learn to avoid producing loud noises due to avalanche risk, and how to control their emotions and desires in a problematically exaggerated manner. It's visually very distinct, even the director seems like he is attempting to doll it up like a dream or an old expressionist movie, so it's not like typical movies at all. At times, I felt the story became a bit confusing and overly strange, but I also appreciate how bold and creative the filmmaking is. See more Joan M @RT15816235 1d Careful is a really strange movie, but that's what makes it interesting. Even though it's one of Guy Maddin's earlier films, you can already see his unique style. The old-school look and obviously fake sets somehow make the town feel real in its own weird way. The story is about a town where people can't make loud noises because it could cause an avalanche. Since everyone has to hide their feelings, things slowly get weirder and more messed up. Most scenes are funny because the dialogue is so dramatic. This is the kind of movie everyone will enjoy, only if you're okay with weird and different films, it's worth watching. It's creative, funny, and unlike anything else I've seen. See more Eric L @Eric_94 Mar 9 Visually innovative (with single-coloured monochrome images, if that makes sense) and it's trying to be allegorical with the threat of avalanche mirroring the precarious lives of its characters. However... the incest sub-plots are a distraction, and take away from the effectiveness of the allegorical tale. The "silent movie" era title cards are quite fun, and it's certainly a nonconformist break from the multiplex blockbusters. See more 05/10/2012 Repressed emotions erupt into suicide, betrayals and duels in a fairy tale Alpine village where everyone must whisper and watch their every move closely for fear of avalanches. This is Guy Maddin, so if features gorgeous stylized visuals based on German Expressionists (here, bizarre hand-tinting choices which lead to scenes performed in brilliant yellow and pink or extreme orange); but, although the setting here is pure fantastic Maddin, the quiet, melodrama-based plot takes too long to engage, making CAREFUL a movie that's more for established fans of this auteur than to newcomers.
