Director Alfonso Cuarón’s dystopian sci-fi action thriller Children of Men (2006) is utterly insane. Cuarón’s direction is the stuff of madness with every single scene being a giant long take each. It must have taken forever. The constant explosions, surprises, gunfire, and blasts are startling. Children of Men is an amazing picture with real ambition, gritty style, heartfelt emotions, thoughtful commentary, and heinous violence. It is dark, depressing, yet poignant because of Cuarón’s realism. Clive Owen is gripping and quietly moving as Thelonius Faron, who is grieving his dead son, a dead world, a dead relationship, and his dead courage. Julianne Moore is amazing as the freedom fighter Fishes leader Julian Taylor. She is so focused and compelling with an endearing quality.
