Claire Dolan, an Irish immigrant, works as a high-priced call girl in New York City in an effort to pay off an unexplained debt to her pimp, Roland Cain, who has known her since she was a child. Claire is detached and ambiguously self-composed, but when her mother dies, the emotion begins to surface. She impulsively flees Manhattan and settles in Newark, New Jersey, where she falls in love with Elton Garrett, a cabdriver. After spending time with her cousin's baby daughter, Claire decides to have a baby of her own, but she is dragged back to Manhattan when Cain tracks her down. After following her one afternoon, Elton discovers her true profession. When he attempts to confront Cain and take Claire away with him, he learns that this won't be as easy a task as he had envisioned. What at first began as an honest and passionate relationship, eventually collapses under the weight of Claire's promiscuous activities. The two have a falling out, drift apart painfully, and are forced to confront their current situation without the aid of the other. [More]

Reviews for Claire Dolan
In spite of Cartlidge's impressive performance in the lead, the film is simply not as involving or moving as it should be.
Less awful than inert, Claire Dolan comes across as a willfully bad movie.
[Kerrigan] accepts the challenge of central characters who do not let us know what they're thinking.
Devotes so much of its energy to building and sustaining a mood of urban desolation that the story never quite jells.
