In this affecting family melodrama from director Robert Mulligan (TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD), Bill and Leona Hart (Michael Ontkean and Kathleen Quinlan) go to Jamaica to recuperate after the death of their infant daughter; there the grieving wife is comforted by the sagacity of the hotel's maid, Clara (Whoopi Goldberg). The wife asks Clara to come to the family's home in Baltimore to look after her teenage son, David (Neil Patrick Harris), and keep house. Initially, Clara and David have difficulty adjusting, but when his parents' marriage dissolves, David turns to Clara for advice and affection. A secret from Clara's past, however, threatens to dissolve David's tentative outreach toward a bright new world.
