Conspirators of Pleasure Reviews

Svankmajer is more interested in detailing than developing & the film feels like a stretched short movie but overall interesting & fun, I've yet to see Faust & Lunacy but Little Otik is my favourite Svankmajer so far

Jan Svankmajer(Alice), uses the same stop motion and puppetry techniques he has become legend for in a movie about masturbation, but containing almost no explicit sexuality. Six strangers bump into each other, exchange glances, and end up becoming th...(read more)e objects of the others affections, which manifests in the construction(for most of the movie), of elaborate Rube Goldbergian sexual apparatus's. How do you have sex with someone who's only an image on a TV screen? It's here, as well as a straw puppet S&M scene, snorting dough, and fish toe sucking, yes that too. There's also an amazing ending, which ties all idiosyncratic strings together brilliantly merging politics, sexuality, and psychology in it's final moment and literal, climax. Like most Svankmajer stuff there's no dialog, and it's amazing the amount of ideas infused in the film only through actions, gestures, and inventions. Hard to find but well worth it. A masterpiece of sexual obsession, repression, and inter-connection. An unlikely film about comming out of the proberbial closet.

Belies gut laughter & mania! This film has grandfathered many like it. It reminds me of many student films since made, exploiting the walls between us, the floors under our feet, animosity. Best by far? The moustachioed man with his fetishistic massaging apparatus. People only look normal! Beware!

A bizarro piece of surrealist filmmaking that is enhanced by emphasizing tactile sensations of the perversions being depicted

Conspirators of Pleasure es una obra bastante simpática. Es debido a lo personal (y aveces extraño) que puede llegar a ser la búsqueda del placer en cualquiera de sus formas que vale la pena ver esta surreal y bizarra producción de principio a fin.

Probably Jan Svankmajer's finest achievement. No dialogue, just his wonderful universe where everything is grotesque and beautiful at the same time.

VHS First Viewing, 2 Svankmajer films seen
Conspirators of Pleasure is a wonderful surrealistic film. I really enjoyed Little Otik, but this film is more like what I was expecting from director Jan Svankmajer. He has his own little section at the video store, and I aim to see every one of his feature length and short films within the next two weeks - the same with Guy Maddin.

Although I didn't enjoy it as mush as Otesanek, I was definately intrigued and entertained without fail. There is slight social commentary in this film, just as was the case with Otesanek, but I don't really think that is the point. It is a cross between Takashi Miike's Visitor Q (without being as trashy or "shocking") and the artwork of surrealist masters like Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali. However, I could not help but to think that this film dangerously walked the thin line between BS (as seen in such films as Songs from the Second Floor and Dog Days) and true surealist beauty. Although I think that the film leans more toward the latter, it is a shame that I must question it. Svankmajer has a unique talent for filming ordinary objects (usually food or anatomy related) in a way that will make the viewer uncomfortable. He creates the kind of uneasyness that will make you mildly nauseous, not to mention you won't want to eat right after (and definately not during).
