Deckard B @B26354 Jun 6 I recall seeing Dragonslayer upon release and only had the opportunity to re-watch it only a few times afterwards, what always struck me is how beautifully dark and rich it still is. This fantasy is on a similar level to films of this era such as Excalibur, with a strong unique level of handcrafted worldbuilding that doesn’t try and explain things, because everything feels natural and lived-in. The film is satisfyingly sophisticated because of this well thought out, or simply honestly realistic, analog mythology, and this is given weight through its cold harsh environments and well rounded characters. Yes it’s a little brittle, like anything of the era but the practical effects of the dragon are frankly breathtaking, even by today’s standards, and the other practical effects feel at home in this magical medieval setting. Revisiting it today I still love it all. See more Blu B @RT43513976 Oct 1 A Deep Cut 80's Fantasy Classic. This has all the cliches you'd expect. A dragon, townspeople to be saved, wizards, a princess, and the heroes journey. In a sense it doesn't break any new ground but it does add some twists to the formula and does the basics overall well. The acting ins't bad. The poster is a bit misleading as it looks like a normal hero and they kind of don't meantion the dude is like a young Richard Simmons who is kind of out of place. But suprisingly the more it went on the more he kind of grew on me and I liked him. He went through hell basically. The girl is cool too and everyone else sin't abd. The dragon design is good too. The special effects are good overall too and creative. Everything else is pretty solid. It's kind of clunky a bit setting things up in the first half. But it finds a nice rhythm in the second half adding layers to the story with the Princess sacrificing herself, the romance, and the actual dragon fight. I do like the irony of how people would rather believe there is no magic and believe in a sacrifice instead. Kind of like our hero too who you'd never believe coud do this. It does jump around but it all makes sense suprisngly more than the first half which was just on the main hero. There isn't a lot of words either in the final 40 minutes or so either and it works to it's credit. Suprisingly gory at times too for a Walt Disney movie as well but it is the 80's. If your a fan of 80's fantasy movies or a big fan of any actors in this than give this a shot. It's Good.
