Consensus: Despite Danny De Vito's top billing, Drowning Mona drowns itself in humor that never rises about sitcom level. Contributing to the Mona's problems is that the characters are never really interesting, and there is a noticeable lack of energy in the character roles

Director Nick Gomez is known for gritty urban street tales like LAWS OF GRAVITY and NEW JERSEY DRIVE. So while the subject matter of DROWNING MONA isn't necessarily a departure, the film's farcical tone certainly is. During the opening credits, the despicable Mona Dearly (Bette Midler) is seen driving her Yugo into the Hudson River. This sets off an investigation headed up by Chief Rash (Danny DeVito), who quickly determines that Mona was murdered. Now his problem is that everyone who knew the woman is a possible suspect. Her self-described battered husband, Phil (William Fichtner), her unnaturally dumb son, Jeff (Marcus Thomas), and her son's much-abused, good-natured landscaping partner, Bobby Calzone (Casey Affleck) all have motives. Complicating matters, Phil and Jeff were both having an affair with the same waitress (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Bobby is engaged to Chief Rash's lovely daughter, Ellen (Neve Campbell). The comedy has its dark moments--there is a grisly running joke about how Jeff lost his hand--but the energetic cast, the film's colorful palette, and quick pacing help make the film quirky fun. Reviews for Drowning Mona
Writer Peter Steinfeld and director Nick Gomez come through remarkably well.
Drowning Mona seems cut out to be a special, two-hour PBS Mystery! not a theatrical release.
Mona is a dreary crash of malapropisms and slapstick maimings wrapped very loosely around a murder mystery.
Disappointingly tame (and often lame) comedy that consistently misses opportunities to do something clever or inventive.
Drowning Mona takes a fresh and funny spin on the classic mystery plot in which someone is so universally loathed that practically everyone is a credible suspect.
The film is monumentally minor -- you'll hardly remember you saw it a week later.
Mona, a screenplay dripping with contempt, gives its cast enough rope and enough bad jokes to make you feel seriously sorry for all of them.
Once you sit through the rest of this comedic approximation of a soak in pond scum, you may wish you had joined her in the Hudson River.
Sitting in the theater watching this crap, it's impossible not to wonder why one bothered to go at all.
