James B @RT31720670 1d The only reason I stopped just shy of a full five stars is because I acknowledge this movie has flaws. The acting is sometimes cartoonish, and the dialogue flutters between extremes of silly at times and truly inspired at others. That said, there is a very special place in my heart for this film. Despite it's flaws it is inspired, and gorgeous to look at. The cinematography and colors are sublime. Timing is also a very big factor here. The movie came out as I was a 12-year old fantasy and D&D geek, so there's no denying the influence those have had on my assessment. Flaws and all, when the movie hits, it hits hard, and this happens often. The early interactions between Merlin and Uther are exceptional. The battle scenes, while dated, are still effective to this day. Lancelot and Guinevere are annoying, but fortunately their screen time, while excruciating, is not enough to dominate the film. Plus, it towers over most of the sword & sorcery films that would follow in the decade. The special efects from 1981 are pretty dated, and the acting is often cartoonish, but when it comes to capturing the essence of the arthurian mythology this film simply gets it, when all the others (and there have been many) have failed. The magic is here, with the sense of a violent ancient age, the emergence of a chivalric ideal to domesticate such violence, then broken by lust and ambition, the decline of magic, and the need for the myth to survive when all the rest fails. More impornat, the storyline has been meningfully synthesized from the mass of events and characters in Thomas Malory's Morte d'Arthur (in itself a synthesis of many centuries of storytelling), so that the film actually tells a powerful story.
