You Might Not Like This One If you're into the "magic of Camelot"—Merlin, Excalibur rising from the lake, and all that mythic grandeur—you might be disappointed. But then again, you might end up loving this film, especially if, like me, you've grown to appreciate what it's really offering. No, it's not a perfect movie. I’ll admit that. Despite some top-notch production values, there are a few moments with awkward effects and weak compositing that pull you out of the immersion. But what the film lacks in polish, it makes up for with heart. At its core, this is a love triangle drama built around three legendary figures. There’s an intriguing emotional tension, a good amount of sword-clashing action, and—oh yeah—Sean Connery as King Arthur. Even Richard Gere, for all his typical Gere-ness, brings a charming rogue quality to Lancelot. And Julia Ormond? She’s excellent—elegant, conflicted, and totally believable. All three leads manage to show strength and vulnerability, making it as much a tragedy of heroes as it is a romance or adventure. It all builds to an epic final battle for Camelot, set to one of the most stirring scores ever put to film by the late, great Jerry Goldsmith. That alone makes the experience worth it. Flawed? Sure.
