Critics Consensus

Reducing the once-terrifying Dream Reaper into a goofy caricature, this joyless climax will leave audiences hoping Freddy stays dead.

The joke is on the filmmakers: By taking the finality out of death, they've already robbed the horror genre of its giddy sting. Go to Full Review

The one interesting idea -- what would a town be like if all the teenagers in it had been slaughtered in five movies? -- is thrown away with a few cheap jokes. Go to Full Review

Other films in the series have varied in quality and innovation, but have remained broadly entertaining. This is the first time the production team developed a film that was, for all sensible intents and purposes, unwatchable. Go to Full Review

The Final Nightmare deserves more credit for exploring the most interesting avenues of the Elm St. franchise since Dream Warriors, but some utterly silly choices squander its otherwise dark tone and blunt the impact of Freddy’s grim backstory. Go to Full Review

Some satisfying moments for longtime fans of the franchise and the way it pays off elements of the mythology, though it's otherwise another forgettable entry into the long-running series. Go to Full Review

Brenden D @WestWardReviews 3d To Call This A Horror Cartoon Would Be To Generous This Contorted Mess Holds No Tension, Provides No Laughs or Scares, The Setting Makes No Sense, The Revelations Are Blah, And The Ending Is Meaningless. A movie that started with great potential fucked itself due to the contrasting ideas that led to the abomination that is Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare. For a movie that vogues to end Freddy’s chapter once and for all, shits on all your hopes of a final confrontation with a nasty Freddy and instead turns the finger knife wearing monster into a crackling wiseman that really isn’t so wise. Thanks Rachel… See more Dallas H @FozzieMcFly Apr 27 I completely forgot there is a cameo appearance by Roseanne and Tom Arnold in this movie, in addition to seeing Breckin Meyer play the stoner character. See more Matty D @Matty927 Apr 22 Not quite the disaster I remembered it to be. It is, for all purposes, an underwhelming finale to a rather strong and beloved horror franchise. With the other sequels delivering better (if mildly uneven) thrills—particularly in both Dream Warriors & Dream Master—-it’s a bit unfortunate that the strongest note this entry seems to have leaned into from those scarier and more serious-minded sequels is: over-the-top wit and camp humor. Don’t get me wrong, it IS nice to see a showcase piece for Robert England’s range of comedic and horror talents, but in the end… this is the wrong movie for the wrong franchise and Freddy deserved better than this. See more Bret M. @BretM-3 Mar 19 I enjoyed this movie quite a bit, but I do think it has one big issue that I’ll get to later. As for positives, Robert Englund is still awesome as Freddy Krueger and gives (yet again) a very fun performance as the character and arguably has some of the most screentime he’s ever had. I think the element of Freddy having an unknown child was a great twist that added a great idea to this movie I wasn’t expecting. I also enjoyed the fun aspects of this movie. In particular, I thought the video game scene was hilarious! It looks so dated now, but I really like it. The outdated VFX gives a classic charm. My biggest complaint with this movie was the runtime. It felt to me that, for this movie being the original “epic conclusion” to the Nightmare movies, it really felt too short to me. It was over just as soon as it started and it made the movie feel less momentous to me.Overall, I thought this was a very solid Nightmare movie that had some fun but ultimately still leaned into its horror roots See more Stanny R @StannyMC Mar 11 I didn’t mind this film at all, after not enjoying parts 4-5 I didn’t have high expectations, but it’s fun. Some very good effects going off throughout and some genuinely funny moments. Shon Greenblatt as "John" is a bit wooden and the lore is all over the place. Freddy’s makeup isn’t as strong as previous entries and the dream demon things are ridiculous. But overall I’d say check it out, has some fun scenes. See more Read all reviews
