Akrami interviews three generations of important Iranian filmmakers from the new wave originals to the post-revolutionary radicals to the dawning new generation; he even throws in commentary by Richard Peņa, Program Director of New York City's Lincoln Center, to contextualize this fascinating and critically acclaimed national film movement. Akrami begins his discussion by balancing different opinions about a particular subject. Some of the topics he tackles are the depiction of children in Iranian Cinema, the role of the government in production, the banning of Hollywood films in Iran, issues surrounding the growing international success of Iranian films, the censorship codes imposed by the Islam revolution, and the representation of women. There are beautiful clips from a number of acclaimed Iranian films and a frank discussion of the creativity that can blossom out of the restrictions imposed by censorship. Anyone who loves Iranian film should not miss this thorough and informative study of one of the most original national cinemas in film history. [More]
