Daniel L @Hotchopeppa Jun 18 Good movie. Bad ending. Great story, great writing and great performances by Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day Lewis. But having a big buildup and then no actual battle at the end was very anticlimactic. Got you excited then left you with blue balls. As John Travolta once said "like masturbation without the payoff". There is no narrative except for one minimal thing, which on a scale of one to ten in how intriguing it is, is about a 1.5. Tedious, ultraviolent for violence's sake, i.e., gratuitous, no story and no point. Strong shooting, acting and production, that's why the one star, Otherwise, it's zero. Like I had hopes it would change the ending from what I expected, but instead it just drug it on for 2.5hrs. And while its somewhat history, nothing about it gave enough real history to feel like a telling of the past. Like I expect the feeling we are expected to walk away with is, "Life is bigger than your rivalry and while some things might feel important in the moment, you have to pay attention to your community or it could all go to shit." Cause the ending gives that vibe of like, wtf was the point of any of it. And for a movie so highly acclaimed I very much dislike the ending/pointlessness that felt like the films end came with. And while the rivalry existed I actually felt like the story suggested more that there was no rivalry and both parties just kind of stole banners to hide their intentions under. Which is an interesting concept, but not one they made a note to call out. See more Vesna A @Markothebestmovieguy Feb 24 Very good movie deserves a better rating See more Kim P @RT98672688 Feb 23 Interesting film with superb acting by all the "old heads': Day Lewis, Neeson, Gleeson, Broadbent, Reilly, Graham, etc. Although DiCaprio was good, his dialect coach probably wasn't happy. Even more so for Diaz, although she was fine and doesn't deserve all the grief she catches for this role. It's strange...if you say the Godfather movies or Casino or Goodfellas are classics and name one as your all-time favorite, no one bats an eye. But if you tell anyone that you love the movie where Bill the Butcher takes a long knife, stabs a pig carcass hanging on a meat hook several times, and declares to his new young friend "That's a kill" after each violent thrust, those folks get all nervous and start edging towards the door.
