Based on the popular comic strip, this live-action comedy follows the exploits of Garfield (Bill Murray), the large, lazy and wisecracking cat owned by hapless Jon Arbuckle (Breckin Meyer). Jon's other housemate, Odie, is a dim but sweet dog who frequently annoys Garfield. When the conniving orange feline gets fed up with Odie, he devises a way to get rid of the pooch. Critics Consensus

When the novelty of the CGI Garfield wears off, what's left is a simplistic kiddie movie.

Melissa M @Lisey 1d In spite of what the critics think this was a fun family friendly movie. This film got mixed reviews. It has an All-Star comedy cast. This movie captures the famous snarky cat to a t. It has all the Garfield characters Arlene, Nermal, & Odie. In the movie Garfield is as usual sarcastic lasagna loving self. Jon takes Garfield to the vet to get groomed. Jon winds up bringing home more than just his sassy cat but a new addition Odie. Garfield is less than thrilled. As the film progresses after Garfield selfishly locks out Odie he runs away. Happy Chapman the film's villain is looking for a new act. After seeing Odie at the dog show he decides that that's exactly what he's looking for. When Garfield sees Odie on TV with happy Chapman. Sees how frantic Jon is He gets a case of the guilts. And decides to go on a reluctant adventure to rescue Odie. After Garfield rescues Odie with the help of some furry friendly strays by the end of the film they are for the most part the best of friends. . See more Nathan J. @NathanDirector 1d Rating: 4.8/10 ⭐️ Celebrating Garfield Day with some lazy 2000s nostalgia. Expected a total cringefest, but Murray’s sarcastic delivery honestly makes it charming. What Worked: • Murray voicing Garfield is a match made in heaven; his cynical energy carries it for me. • Breckin Meyer and Jennifer Love Hewitt fit that classic comic strip style perfectly. • Odie’s dance to “Hey Mama” is super fun and totally pops on screen. The Friction: • The train station rescue part near the end really dragged for me. • The CGI on Garfield honestly looks pretty dated today and pulled me out a bit. Verdict: Watch for an easygoing blast of nostalgia. Skip if silly family plots annoy you. See more Timothy E. @Tnice17 May 20 Great family movie. I have to see the Garfield movie that they made in 2004, 2006 and 2007 See more Blake- N @PBSAniDom May 19 Garfield: The Movie is a disappointing film that wastes a character with so much potential. It never finds a good rhythm, and most of the humor lands flat instead of being genuinely funny. The biggest problem is that the movie feels bland and lazy for most of its runtime. The story is thin, the pacing drags, and it never gives you a strong reason to care about what is happening on screen. It comes across more like a rushed kids’ movie than a memorable family comedy. That said, Garfield’s design is actually okay, and the voice work is also serviceable. Those parts fit the character well enough, even if they are not enough to save the movie from everything else that drags it down. Overall, Garfield: The Movie is just a garbage film in my opinion. It has a few small positives, but they are buried under weak writing, weak comedy, and an underwhelming execution. 2/10. See more Nashua J. @RT08628119 Apr 16 I don’t remember this movie but it’s decent And I like original Garfield See more K G @KatyG-S Apr 11 The personality of Garfield. Typical: this movie is lame. Most hybrid movies never turn to be at least decent. First, take the appearance of Garfield. He is CGI, & the CGI is not enough for a live action world. Why are the other (talking) animals around him live action? They could do with being more CGI/cartoonish or Garfield should be graphically live action (no, that would be wrong). Secondly, the story seems not so original - Garfield must learn to live with another one, Odie the dog & fears of being replaced. Kind of like "Toy Story", huh! They also must save each other. Often, I always thought Jon was handsome, no wonder he could be single & I should be Dr Liz Wilson given that he goes out with her in the end. SO POINTS RAISED! I could never be unsurprised with Brad Garret voicing Luca. Still better than other movies. See more Read all reviews
