THE GOLDEN BOAT is the first film produced by Good Machine, the New York-based, indie-film brainchild of James Schamus and Ted Hope. It is a gleefully wicked examination of the interactions between some inhabitants of the Lower East Side. THE GOLDEN BOAT is a wierd collage film with a taste for the surreal and the macabre. A cast of crazed and crusty characters collide when Israel (Federico Muchnik) follows a trail of shoes on a street in the East Village that lead him to the cheerful but bizarre Austin (Michael Kirby). Austin follows Israel and murders virtually everyone Israel meets while roaming the streets, trying to elude his pursuer, and hanging out in a variety of dumpy tenements with a number of New York originals from the underground like Jim Jarmusch, Kathy Acker, Vito Acconci, Annie Sprinkle, and Barbet Schroeder. John Zorn mixes rockabilly and a quirky improv-world music combination for the eclectic soundtrack. Raul Ruiz blends elements of Mexican soap opera, absurdist drama, and television crime serials into what Amy Taubin of the Village Voice called "a delirious deconstruction of the decline of downtown."
