Julien Davenne has never recovered from the death of his beloved wife, so he carefully arranges a special room devoted to her memory. In it he keeps all the photos and objects that belonged to her, and there he sits for hours, drinking in her presence and gazing at her portrait. Gradually, his obsession with his lost love grows into a larger desire to honor all the dead who have meant something to him -- other friends and relatives, as well as artists who have touched him. He's helped along in this endeavor by the shy and graceful Cécilia, an antiques dealer who helped him recover a ring that was once in his wife's family.
