Movie Info
The newest nerd in school joins forces with the one-time Olympic hopeful whose failure at the Seoul Games made all of America cringe in this Nichelodeon Original Movie. Try as he might, there's just no disguising the fact that Hamm Lake Middle School's newest arrival won't be scoring any winning touchdowns in the near future; not only is Roland (Nathan Kress) hopelessly inept when it comes to sports, but he can usually be found somewhere in a corner with his nose buried in a book. Underdog sports comedy has a bit of edge to it.
...generally remains a cut above its adolescent-oriented brethren thanks primarily to star Christopher Meloni's unapologetically goofy, flat-out hilarious performance.
Meloni's turn in Nickelodeon's "Gym Teacher: The Movie" is a work of oddball brilliance.

Now, the movie has the typical weak geek gets picked on & never give up cliche, but the story is so ridiculously done that it was worth while. It was nice to see Meloni go back to his original comedic roots & play a different comical character. I've always seen him as "Detective Elliot Stabler" from Law & Order SVU (Special Victims Unit), but I've read that he used to do comedic roles in other TV series, & in a handful of movies. So it was great seeing him be funny for the first time.
The movie isn't a piece of genius, but it isn't a terrible movie either. Just don't take it too seriously & you'll have some laughs.
