Critics Consensus

Hackers has a certain stylish appeal, but its slick visuals and appealing young cast can't compensate for a clichéd and disappointingly uninspired story.

Hackers isn't a very good movie, but it's a darn sight more fun than The Net. Go to Full Review

After the mechanics of the thriller plot start to kick in, the film drags. And when it's time for the big cyber-showdown, we're stuck, once again, with footage of frantic typing. Go to Full Review

This is a movie that sums up the worst of the computer era: zapping you with techno-cliches and trapping you in constant visual crash and burn. Go to Full Review

It's not a picture for cynics, requiring some relaxation while Softley explores old tech and cartoon personalities, but it's a vibrant feature that's superbly executed, making for an entertaining sit for those willing to go along with it. Go to Full Review

Facebook U Aug 14 A fun movie that holds up very well. See more Ayden M @RT38589687 3d After having finished high school in the IT program, this movie was a love letter to the tech of its time. The understanding and execution of what most people would have found alien back in the day is so well done and makes for such an entertaining watch. See more Cameron A. @Kozzie May 9 This movie is so 90s and classic cheese fest. Roller blades, floppy disc, arcade skate parks. Just watch it for the vibe. See more Tom F @RT55173143 Apr 16 An essential film for understanding the ‘90s and how the image of hacker culture developed, but otherwise somewhat difficult to watch in 2026. See more Steve Y @Cubby65 Apr 14 Set in some ultrahip New York of thefuture but geared towards 90s computer nerds. 20-year-old Angelina Jolie and Fisher Stevens (obviously enjoying his tole as a computer master) stand out, as well as Jonny Lee Miller sporting a believable American accent. However, flashy visuals and trite cyberspeak can't save this one. See more Farah R. @Farah Apr 14 A film that captures the essence of the’90s, Hackers is best enjoyed as a time capsule for nostalgia rather than an intellectual thriller. See more Read all reviews
