Three successive family Thanksgiving dinners mark time for Hannah (Mia Farrow), her younger sisters Lee (Barbara Hershey) and Holly (Dianne Wiest) and the men in their lives. Lee is having an affair with Hannah's husband, Elliot (Michael Caine), and trying to end her Svengali-like romance with artist Frederick (Max von Sydow). Holly is frustrated by her lack of career fulfillment and her increasing dependence on Hannah's largesse, while being courted by the hypochondriac Mickey (Woody Allen).

The marvel of Hannah and Her Sisters is just how many fully realized characters and relationships Allen is able to weave into the fabric of this extraordinarily well-written film. This script is one to be studied by aspiring filmmakers.

Woody Allen frivolously invoked Ingmar Bergman’s existential approach through his satirically amusing performance and formulaic family drama that’s narratively constructed with a build agreeably consider this is one of his most skillful, finest thought process discourse with a talented cast with genuine conviction of humane complexity. I like Woody Allen but this was like an overdone fancy gateaux that had been chucked on the floor and then an attempt made to get eager customers to still eat it. And as for Michael Caine? We are used to his ice-cold persona in films like Funeral in Berlin, Zulu and the Ipcress File....not some highly-strung, neurotic writer who wants to shag his wife's sister and then live with her. The part was not meant for Caine. And he's not funny, just pathetic and rather disgusting. And since when has committing incest been funny either?? We should remember that Allen- allegedly-had affairs with minors so maybe, to him, Caine's affair is 'normal' for a middle-aged man undergoing some personal crisis. The movie isn't even funny. I smiled twice at a couple of remarks from Woody in the movie. But this has got to be the worse one he's ever made.

Synopsis
