Based on the novel by the mysterious and controversial JT LeRoy, Asia Argento's THE HEART IS DECEITFUL ABOVE ALL THINGS is a penetrating look at the emotional and physical bonds between mother and son. Argento, daughter of Italian horror king Dario Argento (SUSPIRIA), directs and stars in the film, playing Sarah, a young woman addicted to sex, drugs, and danger. The movie opens as she reenters the life of her seven-year-old son, Jeremiah (Jimmy Bennett), who has been dragged away from his serene and apparently wonderful foster home to be reunited with his crazy mother. She has no idea how to take care of what is clearly an extraordinary child, abusing him psychologically as she allows a string of loser boyfriends (including Michael Pitt, John Robinson, and Jeremy Sisto) to beat him physically. Sarah disappears for long stretches of time, eventually forcing Jeremiah to live with his Bible-thumping grandparents (Peter Fonda and Ornella Muti), who find yet more ways to scar the child. But again and again, he winds up back with his deeply troubled mother, who is spiraling downward--and bringing Jeremiah with her. Argento, who also cowrote the screenplay (with Alessandro Magania), gives a raw, powerful, courageous performance as Sarah, holding nothing back. And the actors who play Jeremiah as he grows up (first Bennett, then twins Cole and Dylan Sprouse) are outstanding in very complex roles. The hard-driving soundtrack (which includes Marilyn Manson, who plays one of Sarah's boyfriends) matches the fast-paced editing, making Argento's labor of love a visual and aural treat, even with its difficult imagery and content. Reviews for The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things
Now the fabricated story of a boyhood that included abandonment, rape and near constant fear and humiliation is a movie. The result is unwatchable.
It's a taxing bit of exploitation, which, although you're glad to know it's a work of fiction, doesn't exactly make a case for itself as art.
At best, this film raises an all-too-relevant question: Are true-life stories interesting because they're true? Or because they're interesting? At worst, it raises a different question: What if they're neither true nor interesting?
There is no redemption, no surcease, and as the film ends the barbarity continues. This film made me intensely uncomfortable, but that was its intention.
Stripped of all its lurid backstory, the fictional tale is revealed onscreen to be a mere catalog of horrors, an ugly grafting together of Dickens and America's Most Wanted.
Watchable in a train-wreck kind of way, but you'll probably want to take a shower afterwards.
The emotionless, overwrought movie's lack of psychological depth or dramatic verisimilitude makes the boy's grim odyssey a curiously remote and unshocking horror show.
Argento's entire performance is an act of exhibitionism, and so is the movie, which would have done well to drop that cynical and verbose title and substitute something catchier.
If Deceitful is authentic at all, it's in revealing Asia Argento as the mirror opposite of JT LeRoy. One of these characters is a real artist -- or at least a true believer in the cathartic power of autobiography.
A dutiful course in degradation, complete with a roster of villains as well established as those of any soap opera.
