Heroes of the East is vintage Shaw Brothers with a welcomed sense of comedy to go with the amazing duels. The story follows a Chinese socialite and his arranged marriage with a Japanese girl. Both discover that the other is an expert at kung-fu, though their styles differ. Determined to prove that their respective countries styles are the best they bicker and banter back and fourth and even go to blows a few times. Discouraged by her constant defeats at the hands of her husband the wife returns to Japan to sharpen her skills with her master. An unfortunate letter by the husband causes her master to take personal offense at the husband and he and several of his students journey to China to challenge him and prove once and for all whose fighting style is best. The film is one granddaddy of an epic for the sheer number of weapons and fighting styles showcased. The film has katanas, Jians, Karate, kung fu, Nunchakus, Tonfas, Chinese Three sectional staff, Yaris, Qiangs, Sai's, Butterfly swords, Judo, Shinobi-iri, Shurikens, darts, needles, sleeve arrows, Ninjutsu, Daos, etc. etc. While its a less sweeping storyline than one would find in most Shaw Brothers films it makes up for this in the wild collection of diverse bouts and authentic fighting styles and weaponry. A must see for Kung-Fu aficionados.

Mizuno Yuko is adorable as Gordon Liu's earnest Japanese bride who insists that her culture is superior in martial arts. Marital bliss evaporates soon there after in this bloodless Sino-Japanese war of the roses.
