Jithin K @Jithin Jun 24 This is a pretty good adaptation of the book where the changes felt like it went pretty well for a movie. But it also felt like made the things I didn't like in the book a lot more clearer and became even more unlikeable here. Deschanel's character feels such a misfire in both the book and this movie. It's almost like Adams either don't know how to write relationships or just don't like a single character he wrote in this story. Either way that was bad and that's probably why I enjoyed the second book way way more but it doesn't seem like anyone's going to adapt it any time soon. Even while reading the book, I was like this feels like a 2000s scifi comedy rather than a book from almost 50 years ago. So the movie was good enough but it's not that great. Sure it's a maximalist bomb, but I have a good bit of fun with this movie every time I revisit it, largely because it embraces its own absurdity with such earnest, colorful energy. It may not answer the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything, but it certainly provides an entertaining ride through the stars.
