Melissa M @Lisey May 3 Another movie that doesn't rely heavily on CGI or digital enhancement. Back in the day they didn't have those things. Hollywood had something much better an imagination. This movie is definitely a cult classic. Lea Thompson played Beverly Switzer. Lea Thompson actually sang & played guitar in the film. The song Howard the duck is probably one of the most catchiest theme songs of the '80s. Some of the funniest parts of the movie are when Howard and Phil meet for the first time. When Beverly, Howard, Dr Jennings or at the Cajun sushi. And Dr Jennings a.k.a dark overlord dine & thrashs the diner. While Howard is flying the plane buzzed the duck hunters. I appreciated the multiverse reference made decades before multiverse narratives were in vogue. I loved the “don’t care, we’re going there,” attitude of the writers regarding the Lea Thompson and Howard relationship. A very fun movie, not to be taken seriously, and I was never bored. This pre-MCU Marvel oddity is loud, crude, bizarre, and completely unhinged in ways modern studio films would never dare attempt. The idea of a foul-mouthed, chain-smoking, hard-drinking duck navigating human life is ridiculous on every level, and the film fully leans into that chaos without apology. The screenplay is objectively awful, filled with tonal whiplash, strange sexual humor, and moments that make you question how this ever got made. Yet somehow, that mess becomes its greatest strength. It’s the kind of movie that’s so bad it circles back around to being weirdly lovable. You’re not watching it for quality filmmaking, you’re watching it for the absurdity. The practical costume may look fake, but it has more personality than the modern CGI version ever did. Howard the Duck is unforgettable, deeply flawed, and strangely charming in its failure.
