Michael Lehmann’s noir spoof Hudson Hawk (1991) is a wonderful adventure comedy that takes you on a wild ride. Hudson Hawk has been unfairly demonized as a stupid comedy, but it’s a campy film and Hudson Hawk knows it. Lehmann’s direction is classy as he makes Hudson Hawk look like an old noir thief film, then sends up the entire crime genre in a outrageously surreal journey into nonsense. Lehmann keeps you laughing with silly gags galore and memorable lines from writers Steven E. de Souza and Daniel Waters. Bruce Willis looks like he’s actually having fun playing the titular cat burglar anti-hero Hudson Hawk. He gives into the embarrassing and cool comedy with everything he’s got. Danny Aiello, may he rest in peace, gives a riotous performance as Willis’ friend Tommy Five-Tone. Andie MacDowell is funny and playful as the nun Sister Anna Baragli. Her romantic chemistry with Bruce Willis is oddly natural. Its strange mix of slapstick humor, musical moments, and over-the-top action gives it a style that feels different, even if not all of it works. The movie has an energetic pace and a willingness to embrace absurdity, which can be entertaining at times. However, the tone often feels uneven, shifting between comedy and action in ways that don’t always connect smoothly. The performances are committed, especially from the lead cast, and there are moments where the film’s quirky personality shines through. Some scenes are memorable simply because of how unusual and unpredictable the movie becomes. Overall, Hudson Hawk is far from a perfect film, but its originality makes it somewhat interesting to watch. Even when it stumbles, it never feels completely generic. I’d rate it a 5/10. And at the end of the day, when I'm exhausted, and the world is falling to ruin, and I hate my job, and I have so many kids, I sit down in the evening and love to watch Hudson Hawk, because it sparks joy in it's absolute ridiculousness and Bruce Willis is charming and had a lovely singing voice. So yeah. See more Michael B @RT61027813 Jan 11 I dont understand all the hate. Bruce continues his MOONLIGHTING shenanigans in this over-the-top, slapstick comedy. Sure, it has action, drama, romance, foreign intrigue, sci-fi, mafia mayhem, all the makings of a HOPE & CROSBY ROAD PICTURE, and a fairy tale ending all thrown into a blender; but the cappuccino is perfect. I saw this at the movies, loved it , owned the VHS & the DVD as well. I love Bruce Willis in comedies: Blind Date, North, Cop Out, and Hudson Hawk. James Coburn was brilliant, Sandra Bernhard over the top classic, Andie McDowell gorgeous, Danny Aiello hilarious. If you can't turn the outside world off, grab some popcorn and a beer, then maybe the problem is you and not this funny, zany showcase of talent. See more Read all reviews
