09/29/2024 Even in our own country war is impossible to escape forever Bruce Willis, Emily Lloyd, and Joan Allen directed by Norman Jewison In Kentucky Samantha lives with her uncle, Emmett Upon graduation she doesn’t want to join her mother in Lexington She stays with Emmett and becomes fascinated by his past experiences as a soldier fighting the Vietcong forces Emmett tells her though to drop it as his mental and physical health have been draining away Mainly due to the fact that the war in Vietnam tore him apart and he’s never fully recovered Samantha’s father died in the war as it turns out yet she wants to learn more Lloyd actually reminds me of a young Laura Dern Willis gives a very committed performance as this man who’s PTSD starts coming back the more his past is bright up abs slowly eating away at him Particularly the last half of the movie he confronts Sam about every painful detail Oddly though the first half of this focuses more on Lloyd’s character than Emmett And the film is too long at 2 hours Truth is nobody can ever truly understand what war is like amidst all the gunfire, blood, and death even surviving after the fact and living with it After a while maybe you just don’t care anymore and quit feeling Still it’s one of those rare character dramas that has a specific mood being more about the emotions following war teaching us we can release the grief and the pain See more steve d @RT35616104 07/11/2020 So slow you may check out before anything happens. See more 11/11/2016 Great sleeper film. This was the first meaty role that I had seen Bruce Willis perform and it was the first time I said, "hey, this guy can actually act". Emily Lloyd's lightness elevates this and the reality of Vietnam veteran Jim Beaver and partner in crime Stephen Tobolowsky grounds it. See more Stephen S @GDLSkorne 08/08/2015 Not particularly good. Not the worst film, and to be honest, the last few minutes of this when they visit the Vietnam memorial are great. However, the rest of the movie feels really disjointed and confused. If the director was trying to do this deliberately to try and capture the characters' emotions, I would understand and appreciate it. But it's not done deliberately, it's just clumsy as hell.
