In between slacking off with his school friends, he spends his time dreaming of a way in which he can steal a kiss from her. Suddenly he finds himself cast as the leading man in the school play, and if he can only memorize his lines, he'll be able to kiss Ann in the play's final scene. A sweet coming-of-age tale, KIPPERBANG vividly portrays teenage sexual longings and the loss of innocence, including Alan's ultimate realization about England's diminished role in the post-World War II era. Alan's exploits are narrated in voice-over, as if he were a famous cricket player at bat; unfortunately for him, he strikes out more often than not. Director Michael Apted wrings authentic performances from his child actors, which should not be surprising given his experience working with children in his acclaimed SEVEN UP and SEVEN PLUS SEVEN documentaries.
