One of the first foreign films I ever saw, and somehow the original version feels less acted and more natural than its remake. Ugo Tognazzi and Michel Serrault are hilarious and magnetic as a gay couple navigating family chaos and conservative expectations. It’s a highly entertaining period piece that captures life in the ’70s. Almost 50 years old, yet the laughs feel just as fresh as a modern comedy. Witty, outrageous, and warm, it’s the original version of The Birdcage—maybe a bit sharper, more effortlessly funny, and utterly lovable. Stereotypen. Es ist eine Geschichte, die rein auf kapitalistischer Ebene stattfindet, aber das Thema soll angeblich Toleranz sein. Das beginnt bei diesem Klamauk schon mit dem dunkelhäutigen Diener. Dieser serviert später Essen auf Tellern mit päderastischen Abbildungen. (Dahingestellt, ob das Verharmlosend ist. Und ob das Rassistisch ist) Soll lustig sein. Wirft aber in jeder Hinsicht kein gutes Bild auf den Diener! Flüchtlingsthematik. Die eine Seite stört sich an Frauen. Die Andere an Homosexuellen. Im Nachtclub "La Cage Aux Faulles", gibt es keine einzige Frau. Nur Männer als verkleidete. In der Darstellerriege dominiert der Machtkampf zwischen den Männern. Es gilt, den Mann umzustimmen. Zur Toleranz zu bewegen. Frauen haben hier keine Meinung in der Komödie. Und wenn wiegt sie nichts. Es handelt sich hier mMn um Verhandlungen von Gutbetuchten, die sich aufgrund kapitalistischer Umstände, plötzlich Presse, einigen. Nicht aus eigenem Antrieb. Fälschlicherweise Weise wird das als Weg zur Toleranz bewertet. Der Film hat ein paar gute Lacher, nervt aber wegen der Hauptfigur. Ein Nervenbündel, dass es ständig zu Zähmen gilt. Das Pärchen um das es eigentlich geht, ist halt anwesend. Grundlegend eine Situations Comedy, die, bei näherer Betrachtung, eher Problematisch ist, statt für Toleranz zu werben. Das Ganze funktioniert auch nur wegen dem Setting und der finanziellen Situation des schwulen Pärrchens. Evtl. gut gemeint. Gäbe es "La Cage aux Faulles" nicht bereits, und würde man ihn heute so drehen wie damals, würde er vermutlich mächtig Probleme bekommen. Glorious performances from Michel Serrault and Ugo Tognazzi, along with the sound score, of the lustrous Ennio Morricone. I remember seeing this delightful film, for the first time, in its original version, in the late 70's at the TLA theater, in old city Philadelphia. Joyful memories...
