Synopsis: Hollywood screenwriter Steven Schats (MATTHEW BRODERICK) is on the A-List of complete failures. With visions of development deals dancing in his head, his only ambition in life is to make movies. Finally, after years of pitching his morbid screenplay to anyone with even a seventh degree of separation from a producer, he is suddenly about to join the ranks of the WGA's working roster. Which explains why he's eager to overlook the fact that Joe Devine (ALEC BALDWIN), who represents himself as the man who can green-light Steven's low-budget movie, is obviously more than a few film frames short of any box office insight. In a town where perception is reality, and imposters outnumber unproduced screenplays two to one, Devine is not who he claims to be. In truth, he's an agent—not of the William Morris variety— but with the FBI, and he's on a covert mission to ferret out the mob with criminal ties to Hollywood. While hardly the sharpest tool in the crime fighting shed, Devine is as determined to be a star at the Bureau as Schats is to be one in his industry. And he's just clever enough to make the trusting screenwriter believe that at last he's on the fast track to filmmaking success, in Touchstone Pictures' comedy, "The Last Shot." Touchstone Pictures presents A Morra, Brezner, Steinberg and Tenenbaum Production, in association with Mandeville Films, "The Last Shot," written and directed by Jeff Nathanson, based upon an article by Steve Fishman. Produced by Larry Brezner and David Hoberman, the film is executive produced by Stan Wlodkowski and Todd Lieberman. The co-producer is Ellen Erwin. "The Last Shot" is distributed by Buena Vista Pictures Distribution. -- © Buena Vista Pictures [More]

  • The Last Shot
  • THE LAST SHOT is the laugh-out-loud comedy caper that takes the movie business, the Mob, and the FBI and turns them into some very funny business indeed. Matthew Broderick (THE STEPFORD WIVES) and Academy Award? nominee Alec Baldwin (Best Supporting Actor, THE COOLER, 2003; ALONG CAME POLLY) head a cast of outstanding stars who steal scenes and grab your funny bone every chance they get. After years of being on the A-List of complete failures, Hollywood screenwriter Steven Schats (Broderick) meets Joe Devine (Baldwin), a producer who green-lights his movie and makes him the director. But Devine isn't who he claims to be, not by a long shot. He's really an FBI agent using the movie in a sting to take down the mob. Inspired by the true story of the greatest movie never made, THE LAST SHOT is truly funny.

The Last Shot doesn't crackle and pop, but the send-up of Hollywood and the government gets off some good lines and generally endears itself with a kind of earnest scattershot loopiness.

Planned inanity never gets mad mad mad mad enough, and insider jabs like "I'm not a fake, I'm a director!" don't have the desired zaniness.

There's no affection in this mean-spirited sendup of 'the business' and nothing to mitigate its sour taste.

The Last Shot is wildly uneven, but contains moments that are right up there with The Player.

The premise of this Disney-funded movie, based on a true story, is promising, but the film itself is a hard slog.

Cross Get Shorty with State and Main -- Hollywood hustlers, colorful crooks, crafty poseurs, and a production crew on location -- and you have the stuff of The Last Shot. One other thing: eliminate anything funny.

An often funny if slight satire that's never as edgy as it thinks it is or as sharply focused as it needs to be to put it in a league with a Get Shorty or a State and Main.
