The vehicle arrives bearing two theater pros who have a mission: with dozens of kids and just six days, put on a one-hour musical. From auditions to performance, this film shines the spotlight on productions from five towns as hundreds of children take the stage. THE LITTLE RED TRUCK features an appearance from JUNO favorite J.K. Simmons. [More]

  • “The invaluable notion that artistic endeavor can boost a child's self-esteem forms the heart of the film as it follows 250 kids spread among five varied communities -- from Hollywood to Rankin Inlet, Canada -- who stage one-hour musicals in six swift days when the venerable Missoula Children's Theatre comes to town in its little red truck.” -- Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times. It's magic and mayhem captured through the lens as the kids, under the direction of the two professional tour actor/directors who come with the touring truck, audition, rehearse, mess up, have the occasional meltdown, overcome personal obstacles, jump for joy, don costumes, and eventually grace the stage for a one-hour performance. But more than that, it's a laugh-out-loud and uplifting movie that's perfect for everyone.

It looks like a great program, but this documentary is too scattered to be all that interesting. Too many kids, too much action, not enough time.

Pic's strength lies in charting a dual process, that of a play taking shape in an incredibly short amount time and of the changes wrought in the children's behavior as they learn to listen, focus, follow directions and work as a team.

If it sounds like the cutest thing in the history of cuteness, that's because it is.

The Little Red Truck is more interested in exploring MCT's process than in its real-world results. That's fine, but let's not call this a documentary. It's public relations.

This is kids stuff all the way: incident without drama, controversy, art, or any of the other things that make a movie watchable.

MCT is undoubtedly a worthwhile organization, but that doesn't mean it's fun to sit through what amounts to a 90-minute advertisement for the company.
