Based in part on Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart by John Guy, the film captures the complexity of Mary, Queen of Scots and the turbulent world she lived in during the 1500s. What makes it work is its focus on character and atmosphere rather than just spectacle. It presents the political tension and personal struggles in a way that feels grounded and engaging without needing to spoil anything. The costumes, settings, and performances help bring the era to life, giving it a believable and immersive tone. It’s not perfect and can feel a bit slow at times, but it stays interesting thanks to its historical depth and emotional weight. Overall, it’s a solid watch for fans of true stories and period dramas. I’d rate it a 7/10—thoughtful, well-made, and worth seeing. See more Mrs P @RT41672381 Apr 11 This is so historically incorrect!! I only watched to the end out of wondering how far the butchering of truth would go. What is wrong with truth as a whole, unbiased on both sides? This movie manipulates the audience to pity the catholic Mary, as a kind, fun, millenial thinking, peace seeking, loving, victim. Then depise the protestant, walking dead Elizabeth, who in the end claims to be a man!! Elizabeth is also falsly portrayed as a weak, indecisive, bitter, hateful, queen who looks like a cross between Ronald Macdonald and a witch who is set to murder her sister with barely a second thought. They could only manage change of true historical account by insane amount of creative liscense all through the movie and then conveniently skip three quarters of Marys and Elizabeths lives before Marys death. Final 3 words...Unbelievable, dont bother. See more b c @Maximet Feb 22 Despite strong performances by the two lead actresses, the film is boring and bizarre. It has already stated that the director wanted to make this a rainbow of actors faces' colors and oblique sexuality, therefore deviating from historical fact... but everything else also appeared to be fantastical- the entire enterprise should've been placed in a fictitious land with fictitious people and then it would've been fine. If one wants to make a political statement then do that... making us a film of historical significance, then do that. This is neither - plus it's ugly to watch. Very much now not recommended. It is the perfect marriage of woke revisionism, terrible soundtrack (from a usually decent composer) and historical inaccuracies. A complete waste of your money. I could’ve forgiven the agenda-driven casting had the dialogue and plot been at least a bit historical or interesting.
