Masked And Anonymous Reviews

Another movie that not many people seem to have heard of or seen. A low budget one week wonder shot by the BBC with a charitable cast that reportedly worked for free, I can guarantee that you have never seen a movie quite like this one. Bordering on a metaphorical bio-pic of my hero Bob Dyaln (Jack Fate) and hovering above the apocalyptic backdrop of a war torn (supposedly third world) country, Masked and Anonymous analyses the true nature of human behaviour. Starring Mickey Rourke, Jeff Bridges, Bob Dylan, Ed Harris, Luke Wilson, Val Kilmer and John Goodman just to name a few, this film is disturbing real and aside from Bob singing through out, sometimes in English and sometimes in Spanish, this movie is acceptionally memorable and deserving of praise that it rarely receives.

Strange, allegorical film about the state of politics in America... I think. Almost defies review.

Painfully boring and tedious, in spite of an impressive cast of actors. I had a hard time getting through the whole film, and to add insult to injury, Bob Dylan sings. Why, if you can't sing or even hit the right notes, would you become a singer? It'sd like a blind person becoming a proof reader. His voice is dreadful.

Love & hate this movie. Seinfield creators getting stupid in following Bob Dylan & the people that he meets. Good movie but it kind of wonders all over, just like Seifield.

An excellent portrayal of the chaos of prolonged civil war. Fine actors/actresses. Great acting and music. Little things here and there glare at me. . .not everyone rocks in consistent ways on the bus? but I forgive them for the depth and complexity of the story line.

ugh, just dumb. val kilmer's five minutes was the greatest single rant of all time, but everyone else just wasted time and said idiotic things just to sound sophisticated. dylan didnt write this, that cant be more apparent. half the songs are butchered and the rest are in some crazy other language. which i hate and is not like bob dylan to do such a thing. the whole dramatic deal with his father and family is the biggest joke of his career. oh its just soo pathetically stupid. bob dylan fans; AVOID

This movie does an incredible job of depicting the chaos of a war torn land, in this case a modern day or slightly futuristic America. The characters are deep and their motives are often not explicit. If you like formulaic movies, go watch something MTV funded, if you want to see a masterpiece, watch this.

There is no reason to bump any high priority program off your DVR in order to watch this. Schedule it for curiosity.
I'm trying to figure what they were thinking or what circumstances natural or contrived, led to this production. I haven't figured it out yet.
Many stars have movies like this in their early history. Steve McQueen in the Blob, Melanie Griffith in Smile, but the Anonymous ... stars appear in the prime of their careers. I would love to hear from them, and their take on why they did this.
It would be interesting.
I'm 62. I grew up with and love, the poetry and music of Bob Dylan. Subterranean Homesick Blues. Blonde On Blonde. I love Jeff Bridges performances, too. I have been saying that here is no bad Jeff Bridges movie. I can't say that anymore.

The story makes no sense and the cast seemed misguided. The only saving grace? Tremendous music from Bob Dylan. Only for a big Dylan fan. Fast forward to the musical performances. The rest of it is just too confusing.

Despite the poor reviews here, I feel that Masked and Anonymous is an underrated film that, while flawed, tells an interesting story. Not often listed as a dystopian film, it fills all the elements of a dystopian story. The sets and settings of this film are, in my opinion, among the best of them all. The visuals are very impressive and are the most memorable parts. Now, despite being a Bob Dylan fan, the dialogue isn't all that bad despite being written by him. It's a vanity project, but the reflections and comments often made in the film are interesting and worth listening to. Some of the scenarios go no where and the film itself, o the whole, is rather flawed but it's not a far stray for being a potentially great film.

Huh? I watched masked and anonymous (loved the music) but haven't a clue what it was about.

This is the type of film that is panned by the majority of critics because they can't identify its category, and honestly, they feel threatened by such an innovative work. Watch this film before reading the myriad mud-slinging reviews here, and decide for yourself. This is a fresh, intriguing, intelligent, and wonderful piece just mysterious enough to be a phenomenal achievement. You will be asking questions, and not all of them will be answered. 95% of Hollywood will say that this makes Masked and Anonymous a failure; I say that the unanswered questions are what makes this film WORK. Love it.

What a terrible waste of almost two hours. The premise of the film is suffocated by the abundance of social, political, and philosophical commentary with no apparent point or conclusion. It is almost as if this film was made purely to bludgeon the audience with observations and opinions. What a shame, because the plot that should have driven Bob Dylan's bus would have actually made for a good story if it had been given a chance.

No self indulgence here. Dylan doesnt make himself come across as though he is anything other than a modest man who has seen the forest and the tree's and has been sentenced to imprisonment for having done so. Great, great movie. Some may ring true of our world and some may not. It's a movie. But if you are open to it's themes and what it is trying to say, you might just take something away from it.
Lots of people don't like movies that make them think these days or see the reality of what is going on around them. I guess that thats why there are visionary's to poke fun at themselves in the name of pointing out the truth.

Incredibly underappreciated. Yeah it's cryptic, cynical, and downright strange. But it's a one of a kind allegory for...something. Containing many memorable, surreal, and funny moments. Bob Dylan co-writes, stars, and performs, so, of course, great music as well.
