Now, as... As a child, May (Angela Bettis) had a lazy eye and had to wear a patch, which kept other children from befriending her. Her mother gave her a handmade doll, which became her only companion. Now, as a young adult, the doll is still May's only friend. But when she meets Adam (Jeremy Sisto) at a coffee shop and feels a strong attraction toward him, she tries to overcome her shyness and pursue him. When he ends their very brief relationship, however, it cements May's belief that no person is entirely good--only PARTS of them are good--and she decides to put that concept into frightening practice. A bizarre, darkly comic, and bloody horror treat, MAY is a strikingly original directorial debut from Lucky McKee. [More]

Too much of a hodgepodge of borrowed ideas and uneven tone.

Part Carrie, part Frankenstein and still shlockier bits and pieces, May isn't seamless. But boy is it hard to avert one's eyes from this creature ready-made for the midnight-movie circuit.

A bizarre (and sometimes repulsive) exercise that's a little too willing to swoon in its own weird embrace.

Unfolds with the creepy elegance and carefully calibrated precision of a Dario Argento horror film.

Lowdown genre fun, a film that nearly makes up in slacker wit and high-spirited gore what it lacks in budget and elegance.

Straddles the line between slasher film and sensitive character study with macabre and moving results.

Taps into a furious atavistic energy that reflects well on the filmmaker and his fully committed cast.

Novice director Lucky McKee wrote the first draft of this labored horror flick while he was in school, and for a student film, it's not bad. But it's not ready for the big time.

A horror film and something more and deeper, something disturbing and oddly moving.

While the film does display a certain understated style, not to mention a fair amount of witty black humor, it's ultimately undone by its familiar themes ... and a lengthy, slow-paced buildup that doesn't result in a particularly satisfying payoff.

Led by Ms. Bettis's discreetly campy May, the performances are a cut or two above what you would find in the average slasher film. But in the end that's all it is.
