ME YOU THEM tells the true story of Darlene Linhares (Regina Casé), a woman with a huge heart and the practicality to deal with it; she has three husbands, each of whom satisfies her desires in his own way. Osias (Lima Duarte) is her rogue of a husband, the owner of a goat farm. The affectionate Zezinho (Sténio Garcia) joins the family when his mother dies; he performs domestic duties. And Ciro (Luiz Carlos Vasconcelos), the sexy hunk Darlene finds at work, is simply hot. Directed by Andrucha Waddington, this film is a provocative work that explores the fantasies a woman has during her marriage. In a way, ME YOU THEM is a fairy tale--the fantasy where love triumphs in the face of adversity. But, because it is based on a true story and because Casé's performance is so earthy and easygoing, the fantasy becomes a reality. All of this takes place in the warm, arid landscapes of Bahia, Brazil, the hometown of Gilberto Gil--the legendary master of traditional Brazilian sounds--who also wrote the soundtrack. Waddington's combines the romance and simplicity of IL POSTINO and the wild sensuality of BELLE EPOQUE. [More]

[Case's] dazzling smile and surprising physical grace make Darlene into a primal force in the lives of these three men.

It has been made and acted with intelligence and evident love, which deserves to be requited.

The big screen hasn't shown us a more earthy, commanding woman since Italy's iconic Anna Magnani made her stand.

So generally downbeat that it's difficult to stay awake, let alone laugh, cry, or cheer.

Manages to find the magic through its documentary style, and manages to find the erotic in the commonplace.

Works because the story is sympathetic to the feelings of the characters, observes them as individuals.

With Waddington's help, all of the people involved give us a gently insinuating folk tale.

Its plot loses momentum about halfway through and gets stuck in its own precious rut.

It's a credit to the cast that they are able to juggle these complicated characters and their relationships without slipping into pathos.

A neat combination of healthy sensuality, psychological subtlety and an unapologetic grasp of how the world turns.

A quiet film, certainly, but it's filled with small touches that manage to get deeply under your skin by the time the final credits roll.
