12/31/2014 Great movie having been through all of this many times this is the real thing See more 06/09/2010 (from The Watermark, 05/17/2007) First time producer/director Jason Garrett sheds light on the gay leather subculture as he chronicles the lives of nine contestants vying for the coveted title of Mr. L.A. Leather. Interspersing personal footage of the lives of the entrants and interviews with authors, sex experts, and psychologists, the film works toward achieving greater understanding of this marginalized minority within the community. While the film's goals are commendable, it never feels like it portrays these men as whole beings and members of society outside of the leather world. Nor does it ever quite make you understand the significance of these contests in the world-at-large. The passion of those involved is palpable, and there is no question the competitions are meaningful and taken very seriously by those involved. But the film could have benefited from more purely educational content (i.e. the culture's roots and history, explanations of the roles of "boys" vs. "daddies") to really pull in the viewer to see what makes this other world tick. While it probably won't win over any new recruits, it is certainly a must-see for the existing members of the leather community. See more Read all reviews
