Consensus: Though pretty to look at, The Mystic Masseur is too slow-paced and lacks narrative tension.

While working as a teacher in Port of Spain, Ganesh learns of his father's death. After returning home to his country village for the funeral, he decides to stay and write books. His chronically hiccupping auntie (Zohra Segal) encourages him. Ramlogan (the great Om Puri), an old family friend, pushes the bookish Ganesh to pursue his beautiful young daughter, Leela (Ayesha Dharker of Santosh Sivan's THE TERRORIST). Ramlogan is delighted when Ganesh and Leela get married but later Leela grows frustrated with Ganesh's total immersion in his writing work. When his first book fails to sell, Ganesh returns to healing, and soon becomes a local legend, THE MYSTIC MASSEUR. Ismail Merchant (producer of the Merchant-Ivory films) directed the film, and effortlessly captures the simple beauty of his locations. The veteran cast is superb, bringing the perfect light touch to the material. Mandvi is particularly good in portraying Ganesh's believable transformation from bookworm to celebrity. THE MYSTIC MASSEUR is an adaptation of Sir V. S. Naipaul's first novel. Naipaul won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2001. [More]

Reviews for Mystic Masseur
A real clunker. A well-made, thoughtful, well-acted clunker, but a clunker nonetheless.
Though Ganesh is successful in a midlevel sort of way, there's nothing so striking or fascinating or metaphorically significant about his career as to rate two hours of our attention.
Though Merchant elicits lovely performances that have the calypso music of the local patois, the narrative rhythms of his movie are choppy, abrupt.
Merchant's attention to Trinidadian culture, locales and general atmosphere is inescapably alluring.
Even if the Naipaul original remains the real masterpiece, the movie possesses its own languorous charm.
The result is an eccentric, amusing fable that moves at an unhurried island pace, a picturesque tale that Merchant seems to have invested with an almost personal sense of spirit.
Where it might have been urbane, witty, ironic and politically charged, The Mystic Masseur is merely scenic, melodious and occasionally amusing.
The Mystic Masseur is billed as a comedy, but it's not very funny. It's a social satire, but it's not all that insightful.
It starts slowly, has few dramatic peaks and sketchy character development, and meanders without momentum.
This steadily engrossing film captures the book's bracing humor and humanity.
It's a charmed and frequently charming journey, but like Naipaul's flawed hero, the film suffers from unchecked ambition.
