Adam N @RT93209334 Jun 13 "Nacho Libre" remains solid, but unfortunately never quite reaches the heights of "Napoleon Dynamite". While I was watching this film I frequently found myself wishing I was watching "Napoleon Dynamite" instead. While "Napoleon Dynamite" has memorable characters and dozens upon dozens of amusing quotes, most of the ensemble here are rather one note, and only a few lines are worth quoting. The jokes are rather hit or miss, despite the best efforts of Jack Black. Perhaps it is unjust to compare this film to "Napoleon Dynamite" as I have done, but one cannot help but remember what Jared Hess is capable of, and how "Nacho Libre" ultimately pales in comparison. Jack Black is the center of that balance. His performance is physical and ridiculous, but also vulnerable enough to make Nacho feel human rather than merely cartoonish. The film has been criticized for cultural exaggeration, yet its comedy depends on a deliberately artificial tone where every character is shaped by contrast and rhythm. Beyond the jokes, the story explores identity, class, faith and the need to follow a personal calling without losing the desire to help others. Its soundtrack, color palette and compositions give the film more craft than its surface suggests. It is strange, funny and unexpectedly sincere.
