It's a melodramatic premise on paper that, in the wrong hands, might have succumbed to the sensationalism of its mildly incestuous undertones.

Drab and dreary Marseilles is the home of a vagabond band of teenage ruffians, and Boni Pavone is at the center, living alone in an abandoned apartment, working at a pizza cart, running scams and letting his barely repressed desires for the local boulangere virtually explode. When Nenette, his similarly street-smart and aloof sister breaks out of boarding school and shows up pregnant on his doorstep, Boni must deal with himself as well as his family. Young identities desperately trying to create themselves in spite of and in isolation from the world of adults lies at the core of this hypnotically real distillation of teenage struggle. As Nenette and Boni rekindle their familial bond, they also resume their communal hatred of their father, who wants to reclaim Nenette. Finding comfort in each other, the damage rendered by their disjointed youths comes into sharp focus. The dazzling and sensual cinematography of Agnes Godard renders Boni's pubescent awkwardness and Nenette's wistful loneliness palpable and compelling. [More]

Reviews for Nenette and Boni
The films of French director Claire Denis often chart the flow of energy between two dissimilar people while contemplating their place within the larger community.
Captures the fragile and fleeting impression you often have of life, that's actually closer to life itself than the more comforting, linear perspectives of narrative film.
