Although Sergio (Julian Sands) is not as well-born as some of the other aristocrats in King Charles' (Rudiger Vogler) court, the king nonetheless admires him and arranges a marriage to a wealthy duchess, Cristina (Nastassja Kinski). Sergio is thrilled until he learns that Cristina was once the king's mistress, prompting him to abandon the court in favor of a spiritually unblemished life as a monk. But, when church politics prove too much for him, Sergio gives that up as well to become a beggar.
