Rodgers & Hammerstein take the simplest boy-meets-girl premise and somehow turn it into a disjointed, tonally schizophrenic pseudo-thriller that collapses under its own contradictions. The plot lurches from lighthearted hoedown romance to dark, unsettling episodes: women being auctioned off like livestock in the "Farmer and the Cowman" picnic scene, a desperate man trying to manipulate his rival into suicide, and a surreal kitchen-turned-makeshift courtroom where a cold-blooded murder is cheerfully dismissed so everyone can sing about beautiful mornings. Worse, the show completely erases the actual history of 1906 Oklahoma Territory—no Native Americans, no mention of slavery nor the racial landscape—just a sanitized, all-white fantasy of frontier life. The score has two classics ("Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’" and "People Will Say We’re in Love"), but they’re not enough to justify sitting through 2 hours and 45 minutes of narrative chaos and moral blindness. But there are some really appalling bits that are a product of this movie's time. The auctioning of women and erasure of the acts of removing indigenous people from land they were promised being the greatest jaw droppers. But yeah, great music. See more Alec B @Alec97 05/29/2024 Despite a few annoying cuts/changes to the score and some weird casting choices it is a solid adaptation of the stage musical.
