An impressively plotted, well-acted Filipino crime and corruption drama based on real-life circumstances.

A power packed import from Philippines...

Watching this film was disturbing. Its sense of grit and realness is so close to reality that one can't help but be disturbed that things like this actually happens. Good film and a must watch.

One line summary: Trying to bring down corruption has all sorts of personal consequences.

Set in the modern day Philippines. The film describes interactions among prisoners, crime families, police, police leaders, and politicians.

Tatang and Daniel get releases (under the radar) recurrently from prison in order to carry out assassinations. Tatang's parole has been approved, and he hopes to pass the torch to Daniel after Tatang leaves prison. Daniel clearly is not ready, but it is hoped he will learn quickly on the job.

At the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation), Francis takes on new responsibilities. He is both blessed and cursed by the shadow of his father's accomplishments, such as they were. One of his main jobs is to keep secret the traces of the assassinations. Francis is mob-connected, as it turns out, since his significant other is the daughter of a crime boss.

As one might expect, this network of relationships, held together by blackmail and corruption, is doomed to break. One of Francis' potential witnesses in his corruption investigation gets targeted for assassination.

Looks like the house of cards could all fall down. Which group gets the most damage?

Tatang, Daniel, and Francis all have personal lives that they conduct through all of this. Will they keep their relationships together?

Cinematography: 9/10 Well shot; looks good consistently.

Sound: 10/10 The actors are adequately miked, and the music was wonderful.

Acting: 8/10 Joel Torre was wonderful as Tatang. Joey Marquez, Gerald Anderson, Piolo Pascual, and Vivian Velez were all good in their roles.

Screenplay: 7/10 The film did good story telling here, with a lot of texture, and just enough threads to follow. Almost two hours was not too long at all.

Great casting, Great acting, Great violence to story ratio and to top it all off its cognitively engaging. As well as being a sleek action flick, it has relevance to the modern Philippines without stomping it down your throat.

Just when you thought the ending was predictable, well it wasn't. An authentic representation on how the powerful can manipulate everything. A Philippine crime-drama worth watching. At long last, a Filipino movie with original story full of substance and truth. Story. Actors. Script. Everything is at place.

Story driven, leaving the character's lost on their way. On The Job could have been perfect but nevertheless, it's a win!

I love how the director managed to keep an interesting and realistic story. Each action scene might not be that great but its enough to make you feel so intense and see what else is coming next.

(Quick Summary)

On the Job is a Filipino thriller inspired by a real-life scandal in which prison inmates are temporarily released from prison to work as contract killers on behalf of politicians and high ranking military officials. Tatang and Daniel are only two of a very vast network of assassins, who are not only protected by their government, but how high the conspiracy goes is the stuff of legends. For thirteen years, Tatang has done horrible things, bribed the guards, escorted to their target by the middleman kills them, then gets escorted back to prison, tipping the guards with alcohol and chocolates. Thelma who hires the contract killers prefers prisoners, because they do what they are told and free men create problems. Daniel on the other hand has a few more years left, and is eager to step up. With no real options Tatang begins Daniel's apprenticeship. His first real assignment was very sloppy, but effective. His second wasnt good. The hit was a top government official and he didn't finish it off. Later we meet Lt. Francis Coronel, Jr. who is a very ambitious and a very well-connected investigator who takes this lucrative investigation. But the deeper he digs the dirtier he looks. Soon enough everyone is in a single web, and everyone loses!. The film is a very compelling look at the Filipino underworld, with some great character development. The principles explain why they do what they do it is not just a plain shoot em up. The dialogue was a confusing mix of Filipino with English mixed in at times, but the visuals eventually compensated for the language confusion. Story wise you needed to pay attention, hang on, and figure out what was going to happen next. That is not saying that the film did not have it's fair share of senseless violence. Most of the hits were spectacularly gory, some of the kills put me in a state of awe. This film had a good mix of a solid story, great characterizations, and uber violence makes is a must see for anybody who enjoys gangster flicks.
