Then, in the midst of blackouts, riots, the Son of Sam serial killer scare and the dawn of Studio 54, came an entirely unexpected moment of inspiration: the rise of the New York Cosmos, America's first great soccer team, and its larger-than-life superstar, Pelé. Suddenly embraced by a city obsessed with celebrity and flamboyance, the Cosmos kicked off America's first passionate love affair with the world's most popular sport. But swept up in a careening path of glory, glamour, debauchery and controversy, the Cosmos themselves imploded. It is a thrilling tale of how a powerful group of entertainment moguls, a scrappy team of rag-tag athletes and a city in need of a rousing boost pulled together to create a phenomenon that in turn forged the soccer moms of today. Narrated by AcademyŽ Award-nominee Matt Dillon, ONCE IN A LIFETIME: THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF THE NEW YORK COSMOS reveals how the Cosmos rose from total anonymity to become the hottest ticket in town -- taken under the wing of Warner Bros. Chairman Steve Ross, beloved by rock stars and fashionistas -- only to be overwhelmed by a wild world of wealth, groupies, rivalries and power struggles. Using a combination of nostalgic 70s soul and pop music, never-before-seen footage, exciting sports action, newsreels from the summer of '77 and candid interviews that range from Marv Albert to Henry Kissinger to Mia Hamm, to the colorful, clashing former Cosmos players themselves, the film creates a humorous, entertaining and richly layered look at a time and place that changed American sports forever. Miramax Films, GreeneStreet Films, and ESPN Original Entertainment present ONCE IN A LIFETIME: THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF THE NEW YORK COSMOS. Narrated by AcademyŽ Award-nominee Matt Dillon, the film is directed by Paul Crowder (editor of Stacey Peralta's "Dogtown and Z-Boys" and "Riding With Giants") and John Dower (director of the Britpop documentary "Live Forever") and produced by John Battsek (AcademyŽ Award-winner "One Day In September"), Fisher Stevens and Tim Williams of GreeneStreet Films. The executive producers are John Penotti, Julie Goldman, Andrew Ruhemann, Michael Davies, Vicki Cherkas and Cedric Jeanson. [More]

Once in a Lifetime is like a soccer team that plays good defense but lacks offense.

Well-researched and exuberantly compiled, this is a thoroughly entertaining tribute to America's first tackle at surgically implanting the beautiful game.

Not being a soccer fan, the Cosmos phenomenon had no impact on me at the time nor does this energetic film change that opinion.

With just a little tweaking ... could be reworked in a Christopher Guest-style mockumentary of swollen egos and corporate whimsy.

Packed with observations and recrimations, many of the latter aimed at or by Chinaglia, which makes for some gossipy entertainment.

Once in a Lifetime, which relies on interviews and archival footage, may not be a great documentary, but it certainly gets its points across.

It's a rags-to-riches story that shows how American money and imagination revolutionized not just a team, but the entire sport of soccer, back then and still to this day.

Once in a Lifetime is riveting cinema for at least an hour, after which it starts to feel a bit like thumbing through a scrapbook. But American soccer fans -- and those interested in the business of sports -- will eat it up.

Once in a Lifetime would have benefited greatly from historical and outside perspective, but the story on screen is such a kick that even monotone narrator Matt Dillon gets caught up in the excitement.

It has some funny scenes and wild characters who reflect back on the glory years, where the clashes of ego were as legendary as Pelé's amazing bicycle-kick goals.
