Themes of isolation and friendship play out in another fine crop of Academy-nominated toon shorts.
The fact that dedicated committees of conscientious human beings who know a lot about how movies are made weeded through hundreds and hundreds of submissions and picked their favorites ... is something to be grateful for.
The animated shorts category is much stronger, with the two best coming at the art of 'toons from opposite quarters, aesthetic and commercial.
A consistently strong category that this year once again demonstrate a range of stunning styles from line drawing to fine-art painting to CGI-sometimes in the same film.
The six films I have seen are enough to highly recommend one of the best animated collections in recent years.
Three of the five [nominees] are slight tales of unlikely friendships, as though that was the only tale that melts hearts.
The French 'Mr. Hublot' creates an utterly real yet completely fantastical world, a palpable steampunk environment of gorgeous mechanical loveliness.
No world is too beautiful or strange for the art of the cartoon... often as pure as filmmaking gets.
Uniquely among the nominees this year, "Feral" pays its audience two compliments: it doesn't spell everything out, and it doesn't confine itself to a naturalistic narrative; both choices are well-supported by distinctive, pseudo-primitive art.
