Melissa M @Lisey Jun 7 Kurt Russell plays Dean Profit & Goldie Hawn plays Joanna Stayton. Joanna is a spoiled brat socialite who hires Dean a down to earth Carpenter. In spite of Dean's best efforts Joanna is unsatisfied with his work. She refuses to pay him. And after a brief argument she literally throws him overboard. As the movie progresses while searching for her wedding ring on Deck she proceeds to go overboard. And loses her memory. Her husband Grant sees it as an opportunity to leave her. Dean sees as it an opportunity to come up what he thinks is a foolproof scam to get his money back. In his own charming way he convinces her that her name is Annie his loving wife, & mother of his 4 rambunctious children. That's when the real hijinks begin. In spite of some of the adult themes. It's a fun family friendly movie. The undeniable chemistry between Goldie & Kurt is while this film wouldn't be considered a traditional romantic comedy. It would definitely qualify as one. This is a classic. It is a fun, goofy, sappy film and deserves every accolade for being a time tested comedy that never seems to get old. It was SO good it spanned a redo, which was awful. Goldie and Kurt’s chemistry was real and electric and those kids were awesome. I still laugh at many of the jokes and will again and again. Perhaps the reason some people don’t like it is because they have never found true love in their lives that involves a real person? Sad. The core premise is interesting, with its "rich vs. working class" role reversal and mistaken identity setup, and Goldie Hawn brings energy to her performance. However, the story often leans into predictable jokes and stretches its premise a bit too far without much real depth. Kurt Russell does his part well, but the romance feels uneven given the circumstances of the plot. While there are some lighthearted and entertaining moments, the film doesn’t offer much beyond its basic concept. Overall, it’s watchable and mildly entertaining, but nothing especially memorable. Anyhow, Overboard gets one for Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell and a realiably wonderful tune from Randy Newman over the end credits. DEAR JESUS! What bloody cretin would greenlight such a hunk of junk? Ladies and gents, may I introduce a romcom in name only that manages to exceed My Best Friend's Wedding in terms of mean-spiritedness! The man responsible for bringing this into existence must donate his brain to science to ensure his worst impulses are singled out and never repeated. That is one icky, reprehensible premise right there. We're meant to believe that Joanna's redemption is a result of discovering her first ever authentic relationship - autentic insofar as being embedded in humiliation, manipulation and lies about the foundations of her very existence. At this stage I'm seriously doubting that Garry Marshall even made a decent movie besides Pretty Woman. It's also largely as unfunny as it is ill-conceived.
