Based on Satrapi's graphic novel about her life in pre- and post-revolutionary Iran and then in Europe. The film traces Satrapi's growth from child to rebellious, punk-loving teenager in Iran. In the background are the growing tensions of the political climate in Iran in the 70s and 80s, with members of her liberal-leaning family detained and then executed, and the background of the disastrous Iran/Iraq war.

Kind of interesting and is kind of original but its telling moments are told so often it's like going out to dinner and being served the same course over and over. Go to Full Review

Persepolis is, in its way, a hymn to the enduring influence of family, particularly during a time in which the state is attempting to seize all hearts, minds and instincts for itself. Go to Full Review

Richly imagined and painfully honest, it is an uncompromising look at the culture of Iran as seen by an observant and open-minded child of Iran and rock and roll... Go to Full Review

Paolo F @XKP-Producer 13h Persepolis is a masterpiece that quietly stays with you long after it ends. Through Marjane Satrapi's deeply personal story, history is seen not from the perspective of leaders or armies, but through the eyes of ordinary people whose lives are forever changed by political upheaval and war. That human perspective is what makes this film so powerful, and it reflects the spirit of Satrapi's entire body of work. The simple black-and-white animation carries an extraordinary emotional weight, allowing every joy, fear, and loss to feel genuine. It is moving, honest, and beautifully told without ever becoming sentimental. A remarkable film that deserves to be seen and remembered. Just keep in mind that, despite its animated style, it is not suitable for young children. See more Rody T @RT56832923 May 24 The best animated movie that I've ever seen, in my opinion. It's discussing the sides of being born in an islamic country. Shah wasn't right and the revaltion laws, too. Every community that oppress the humans and takes any right from their rights and freedom; becomes a failure communities. See more Jens B @Jens97 Mar 31 Even in the tragic moments, Marjane Satrapi is full of wit and creative ideas, making "Persepolis" an enjoyable yet thought-provoking and heartbreaking film. Today, as Islam and headscarves become increasingly popular among German youth of the TikTok generation, it's helpful to remember how many people have been tortured and murdered in the name of (not only) this religion, simply because they wanted to live self-determined and true to themselves. Religion is a Pied Piper, not an answer. It serves only to oppress, to enable a minority to rule. We need more grandmothers like Marjane's... See more Elika J. @syanna Dec 27 As an Iranian, watching this was frustrating. The historical knowledge is pretty accurate, but the voice actors would constantly pronounce things, such as Tehran and Iran, wrong. The voice actors sounded monotone, and had distinct American accents. You’d think a movie about the Iranian revolution would have at least a few Iranian voice actors. It was embarrassing to watch.
